Beginners Banjo

What is a quality banjo for beginners?
I’m getting someone a banjo for Christmas… I don’t want a cheap one, but he is a beginner.Washburn makes very nice banjos. You can pick one up for only about $150. Deering also makes nice banjos.

My price range is about $300-$400, what is a good type to get for him?
and what about learning tools like books or dvds? Any really helpful dvd learning guides?

If you’re handy, you can make your own banjo. I used to own a Washburn but had to sell it, so I made my own banjo. Mine is a mountain (Appalachian) style banjo. I made a cookie tin banjo for a friend’s child to learn on. That one was incredibly easy to make, and although it sounds different from a bluegrass banjo (it sounds more metallic) it’s still fun to play, and sounds good.
