Parker Guitars Acoustic
Why do people who don’t know anything about music hate jazz but love pseudo jazz acts like Buble and Sinatra?
Just an honest question. I’ve talked to so many people who HATE jazz with a passion. But I can’t take them seriously, because 99.9% of them don’t know anything about music (they might know how to play a few johnny cash or sublime songs on an acoustic guitar, but most of these “musicians” don’t even get the concept of modes or improvising). I live in New York, which is pretty much the mecca of modern jazz and nu-jazz, but I still run into tons of people who hate Coltrane and Miles. Why? I just can’t understand it….. Is it not catchy enough (what about Kind of Blue or My Favorite Things?). Are the musicians not talented enough (Even though they spend most of their childhood studying music). How can someone like Buble or Sublime or Nirvana or Dylan or Kenny G but not Mingus or Charlie Parker or Bill Evans? I’m not trying to be offensive, but I take great offense when people say: “I don’t like jazz.” I just don’t get it……….
You must exposed this music when they are young. Before their peers get to them. In my city there are some jazz music, mostly on public radio or college stations. But commercial radio is what has the music sales. In the 70’s there were a few jazz bands that could fill large places. Weather Report drew well as did Return to Forever. Their music did a good job getting me into others.
